Business tech health check

A quick self-audit for small businesses. Answer honestly—nothing is saved.

Answers: Yes (in place) • Partial (some coverage) • No (not in place) • N/A (not applicable)

What is our business tech health check tool?

The Business Tech Health Check is a quick self-audit designed for small and midsized businesses. By answering a handful of questions across core IT and security areas, you’ll get a snapshot of how resilient your technology setup really is.

It’s not a compliance test or penetration audit — it’s a practical, no-pressure tool to help you identify where your business is strong and where you may be exposed.

Every answer is anonymous. Nothing is saved. The goal is simply to give you clarity and a starting point for improving your business technology posture.

Why take the business tech health check?

Small businesses are increasingly targeted by cyberattacks, data loss incidents, and costly downtime. Yet most SMBs don’t have dedicated IT teams or full-time security staff.

The Business Tech Health Check helps bridge that gap by giving you:

  • Visibility – Know where you stand across patching, identity, backups, endpoints, and more.
  • Prioritization – Weighted scoring highlights the areas that matter most.
  • Plain-English guidance – Questions are written so anyone — not just IT pros — can answer.
  • Actionable results – Your score points to the quick wins and bigger projects that deserve attention.

Think of it as a check-up for your digital backbone — a way to spot problems before they become business-ending events.

How it works

You’ll go through a short series of questions in key categories:

  • Patching & OS – Are updates and third-party apps kept current?
  • Identity & Email – Do you have MFA, proper email authentication, and phishing filters in place?
  • Backup & Recovery – Could you recover quickly if a server, laptop, or SaaS platform failed?
  • Endpoints – Are your laptops, desktops, and mobile devices secured and monitored?
  • Access Control – Do you manage accounts responsibly and review them regularly?
  • Logging & Response – Would you spot a breach, and do you have a plan for the first 60 minutes?
  • People – Are employees trained and onboarded with security basics?

Each question can be answered:

  • Yes (in place)
  • Partial (some coverage)
  • No (not in place)
  • N/A (not applicable)

Weights (w:1–3) indicate the relative importance of each question — so MFA and backups carry more weight than, say, screen lock timers.

When you finish, your total score is calculated instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a compliance audit?
No. The Business Tech Health Check is a self-assessment tool. It gives you a pulse check on your IT and security health, but it doesn’t replace formal audits or certifications (HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001, etc.).

Will my answers be stored?
No. Nothing is saved, shared, or transmitted. This is a private self-audit tool.

Who should take this?
Small business owners, office managers, or IT leads who want a quick view of where they stand. Even non-technical staff can complete it.

What do the scores mean?

  • 80–100% – Healthy foundation. Keep monitoring and refining.
  • 60–79% – Reasonably secure, but several gaps to close.
  • 40–59% – Significant weaknesses. Prioritize fixes immediately.
  • Below 40% – At risk. Consider professional IT/security assistance.

Can this help with insurance or compliance?
Indirectly, yes. Many cyber liability insurers ask about MFA, backups, and patching. The health check can show you whether you’d be able to answer “yes” with confidence.
