The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), or in modern systems UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), is the low-level firmware that initializes your hardware and prepares your PC to load the operating system. While most users never think about it, the BIOS is essential to system stability, hardware compatibility, and performance. Updating the BIOS, also called “flashing,” can resolve bugs, improve hardware support, and even enhance security.

However, because the BIOS controls the fundamental startup process, performing an update incorrectly can cause serious problems, including rendering a computer unbootable. For that reason, it’s important to understand when a BIOS update is worthwhile, how to prepare properly, and how to perform the update in the safest way possible.

Understanding BIOS and UEFI updates

The BIOS or UEFI firmware sits on a chip on your motherboard, separate from your operating system or storage drives. Every time you turn on the computer, this firmware wakes up the CPU, initializes memory, and configures the hardware environment before passing control to Windows, Linux, or any other OS.

Manufacturers release BIOS updates for several reasons. In some cases, new CPU models or memory types require updated firmware to be recognized properly. Updates may also fix bugs, address compatibility problems with graphics cards or storage devices, or patch security vulnerabilities such as those related to speculative execution exploits (e.g., Spectre and Meltdown). In rare cases, BIOS updates can improve boot speed or add new configuration features, but their primary role is ensuring stability and compatibility.

Unlike operating system patches, BIOS updates are not cumulative in the same way, nor are they delivered automatically through Windows Update (except on certain prebuilt systems). Instead, they must be obtained from the motherboard or system manufacturer’s website. Some modern motherboards allow updates directly through the BIOS interface itself using a utility such as ASUS EZ Flash, MSI M-Flash, or Gigabyte Q-Flash, while others may require a bootable USB stick.

Because the BIOS operates at such a fundamental level, updating it carries risks if the process is interrupted by power loss, incorrect files, or user error. That’s why manufacturers generally advise only updating if you are experiencing specific issues or require support for new hardware. If your system is running stably, updating the BIOS “just because” is usually unnecessary.

Preparation before updating

Before attempting a BIOS update, it’s critical to prepare carefully. Start by identifying your exact motherboard or system model. The update file must match this model precisely — using the wrong one can permanently damage your system.

On custom-built PCs, you’ll find the model name printed on the motherboard itself or in system information tools like CPU-Z. On prebuilt systems, check the manufacturer’s support website by entering your model number.

Next, review the changelog for the new BIOS release. If the notes only mention minor features that don’t affect you and your system is stable, it may be safer to skip the update. If the update addresses bugs you’re facing, adds compatibility for new hardware you intend to install, or provides security fixes, then proceeding is justified.

Ensure your system is running on reliable power. For laptops, plug into AC power and make sure the battery is charged. For desktops, avoid updating during storms or in situations where power may be unstable. Some advanced users connect their system to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to add a layer of safety.

Finally, prepare a backup plan. Create a system restore point or back up important files to an external drive. While BIOS updates don’t normally affect data on your storage drives, in the rare case something goes wrong, having backups ensures you don’t lose important information.

Step-by-step safe update process

  1. Download the correct update – Visit your motherboard or system manufacturer’s official website, locate your exact model, and download the latest BIOS file. Save it to your computer, and if required, extract the compressed archive.
  2. Copy to a USB drive (if needed) – Some update utilities require the BIOS file to be on a FAT32-formatted USB stick. Others, like ASUS EZ Flash or Gigabyte Q-Flash, can detect it directly from your system drive. Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
  3. Enter the BIOS/UEFI interface – Restart your computer and press the appropriate key (often Delete, F2, or F10) to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the update utility (names vary by manufacturer: EZ Flash, M-Flash, Q-Flash, etc.).
  4. Run the update utility – Select the downloaded BIOS file and confirm the update. Do not interrupt this process. The system may restart several times and show progress indicators. Patience is crucial here — turning off the PC mid-update can corrupt the BIOS and prevent booting.
  5. Automatic reboot and reset – After completion, your system will reboot. It may reset BIOS settings to default, so check your boot order, XMP profiles, or other custom configurations. Reapply them if necessary.
  6. Verify the update – Once back in Windows, confirm the new BIOS version by running msinfo32 (System Information) or checking directly in the BIOS menu. If everything matches the downloaded version and your system runs smoothly, the update was successful.

Best practices and prevention tips

BIOS updates don’t need to be part of your regular maintenance routine. The safest practice is to only update when there’s a clear reason: a bug you’ve encountered, new hardware compatibility requirements, or a critical security fix listed by the manufacturer. If your system is stable and functioning as expected, leaving the BIOS alone is usually the smarter choice.

When an update is necessary, always download directly from your motherboard or system vendor’s official support page, never from third-party websites. Verify that the version number and model match exactly. Keeping a UPS on hand for desktops, or at least ensuring a laptop is on AC power with a full battery, helps eliminate the risk of interruptions.

Finally, familiarize yourself with your board’s built-in recovery tools. Many modern motherboards include dual BIOS chips or recovery utilities that allow you to reflash in the event of corruption. Knowing what safeguards are available can give you peace of mind and a backup plan if things don’t go perfectly.
